In western china, the area that was formally part of Tibet is populated by people who tend cows and live off the land. Many of these people are what most of us would call "under privileged" due to their way of life and the fact that most of them only bathe a few times in their life. You see these people roaming the lands on their horses or motorcycles, usually watching after their cows, goats, or gathering water. The people live in black tents which shows that they are nomadic in nature, probably because of their cows and that during the winter everything gets covered in snow. Its very cold out there despite a bright and glairing sun (1/4000 ss at f22 very common) and the people tend to cold cook out there. Skin turns reddish brown and wrinkles away, even I had turned a little more brown after my visit.

This guy here is trying to negotiate with us to get passage to the next town via our van. I liked the many items of interest he had especially his ring which was very gaudy. We had a hard time talking with him due to the fact that even though most of the natives speak the Sichuan dialect out there, they speak their own variation of it which has some mixed in words from Tibetan.

This shot worked out pretty well for me, I got every point of interest that I wanted to capture into the frame, his face, his hair and glasses, the watch, the ring, his clothes, the fields behind him, the cigarette, etc...sort of a spontaneous capture with a lot of luck.

Canon 30V, 28-135 IS lens, Fuji 100 film.

I love this picture!

The expression on this man's face hides alot of hardship and pain despite the beautiful surrounds in which he is in.

Very well done!

Great portrait, my friend! Shows a lot of emotion. I think I also like the fact that he is not looking directly into the camera. well done.
Yow, his ring!! I really love your shots, man, this is another great one! That's pretty interesting, so all of you guys were sitting cross legged out in the open fields and talking to this guy? ^_^

i love how peaceful and content this person looks. why do we assume that when people do not have the same opportunites as us, we often refer to them as under-privelaged? maybe they don't want or need the same things we do. so maybe we are the ones who are over-privelaged or greedy. :|
a most wonderful piece--and i loved the introduction and explanation of your piece. you would make a wonderful photokournalist for National Geographic.
