The old gritty look is something that I have always liked about China. Even though some of it has became modern, many places still retain this classic old fashioned feel of a different time.

Before I took this photo the cat was sitting under the old ladies chair. When I approached to take the photo the cat got out and was very angry about me being there, growling at me with that annoyed cat meow. It really did not like the idea of me there and always stood between me and the old lady like it was protecting her. Great loyal cat.

The house behind her was build before China was at war with Japan. When Japan invaded the capital of China was moved from Bejing to Chongqing by Mao Zedong as a strategic point deeper in the country. The houses were then painted black to make it harder for Japanese bombers to target them at night. Many of the old style houses are still used today by the lower income bracket. They make great areas to hang around and look for interesting street photos.

Note: The thing about Chognqing becoming the capitol for a brief period of time is true but there seems to be some conflict with Mao and the time it was moved here.

Anther note: Ive done some more looking into who moved the capitol and amazingly no one can tell me for sure. Some people say it was Mao, some say the Nationalists, some say other things, even researching it online I have not got a straight answer. From the timing of the invasion and such I am inclined to think the Nationalists are the ones who actualy moved it.

Also gota give a lot of love to my friend hexentanz (who for some reason I have lost contact with) for featuring this as DD, thanks thanks thanks thanks :)

Often when people think of China they think of tall NYC like buildings, busy streets, fast paced lives. Guardian by *avotius will show you it's not just about the hustle and bustle that makes China an interesting place to explore. ( Featured by `hexentanz )
