A young monk in the Hong Yuan monastery holds up a picture of the Dalai Lama, a symbol of the disciplined life he has committed to. Icons of the Dalai Lama are everywhere in the Sichuan grasslands. Stores sell plastic pendants with pictures of him, DVD’s his and various other high level Lama’s religious sessions, CD’s, and most interesting of all a large plastic pendant that has a picture of the Dalai Lama and a speaker in the front that plays a recording of him chanting. Many of the monks and Lamas on the streets wear such pendants and many of the villagers have posters and icons in their homes.
