Artist's Comments

Joseph is the newest foreigner to come and study at The Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. He had not even been here for more then 9 days before I called him into the studio to sit in front of my lens. He is a 23 year old from Ghana studying oil painting here and really loves to play football (soccer). And despite being a little shy around the people here and not speaking any Chinese at all he still goes to the school’s football field to kick around the ball with the other students.

This photo was taken as part of a class assignment from my portrait photography class. Kind of going away from my norm I decided to take photos of foreigners here at the school for this assignment and try out different studio techniques. Think character shots...

Ps. this was the first time I had ever taken a photo of a black person. I learned that taking photos of Asians and white people are not so hard when it comes to metering and what not, but for black people it can be quite difficult to not shoot them so they look kind of….creamy…

Canon 20D, Canon 50mm f/1.4 Lens, 2 studio flashes with diffusers.

lighting wise this shot is very well done... probably I would have used a different background to create a non standard portrait shot... but may be this is exactly was the assignment... overall this is great shot

yeah, it kind of came down to what we had available, a grey felt background which I used, a green felt background, a red felt background, and a blue and white felt cloud background. What I also was going for with some of these shots was that really plane portrait "hollywood headshot" look but with a few twists on composistion.

yeah... I hear you:) but like I said it's a great portrait...

Hey great shot! How long is your study there, chongquing?
:iconavotius:
chongqing, the home of spicy food in china. I have been here for 2 and half years, probably be here for a lot longer then that, I really dont have any plans on going back to the usa.

thanks for stopping by and having a look. One of the things that I found out works really well is to keep talking to the person you are photographing, it worked out really well here, at first he was really shy and kept looking away and so on but after talking to him a bit, asking him about sports and his home then ya know, he warmed up more to the camera

You capture characters, not simple frames. That's why I enjoy looking at your work.
Bravo!
