Here is a person, mostly likely to no fault of his own, has been dealt a bad hand in life. Even if it was his fault, isn’t this enough punishment for any man?

I watch this poor soul drag himself accost the streets for days and it’s just a sad sight to see him around. I never see him beg for money, nor do I ever see anyone speak to him. As typical here in China, people look down on these unfortunate people (yes they are people if hadn’t noticed) as a lesser form of life. They live under bridges, in door ways, or anywhere they can find their own little bit of “comfort” in a world that has turned its back on them.

You might notice the little object on the left side of his cart, which is in fact what’s left of his leg, the other one is just as short but is concealed by the bag containing his worldly possessions. You might also notice the two blocks to his sides. Those are bricks which he presses against the ground to help him crawl to where ever it is he is going. The bricks have been worn down to cone shaped nubs.

For me this is the ultimate contrast. The light, a sign of hope and determination shining down upon the man with the cruelest of destinies. The darkness of the people who have turned their back to him. The ones who cannot stand and the ones who can. The person who didn’t just give up and die when fate took away his legs and the people who will take for granted the ability to walk.

This is what I was thinking when I first layed eyes on this photo.

Beautifully captured, definitely makes my heartache from the sadness.

"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset." -Crowfoot, Blackfoot warrior

OMG...don't they have wheelchairs in China? Poor man. Theres no reason why this man couldn't have a full life. I love this photo...although it just makes me angry.

Life is just waiting around for the next disaster. The only consolation is, one of these times it'll be fatal.

Once more, in a land of many, the few are worth nothing.

I've seen the same thing in london: a man, covered in dirtied paint-splattered clothes, traversing the streets by lifting his torso above the ground with his hands. Nobody even stops to look at him -- some for fear of him seeing them seeing him, some fear they'll somehow be taken down to his level, some just 'dont have the time', even in a world where people spend over 30,000 hours at work.

'You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can't be hidden.Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.' - Matthew 5:13 - 16

Strange, I'm not religious or accustomed to quoting scriptures, but these words seem compelling.

Great photo.

Authoritarian states tend not to care for their (many) people.
:icontoadsmoothy2:
We have problems here in the States too. Mostly with the mentally ill and those addicted to alchohol and drugs. There is governmental and charitable help available in my city, as elsewhere, but they refuse to take advantage of it but prefer to live on the streets, abusing themselves and others. Sometimes its hard to know what the answer is.
