Chongqing is going through a large development phase in a rush to catch up with other modern cities in China. Part of this development is tearing down houses which are run down and in neighborhoods infested with rats, thieves and other pest. When a neighborhood is slated for demolition there is always the customary protests by the people living there about how they feel cheated for the compensation for their houses, and the scrap pickers come through looking for any piece of metal or plastic they can walk off with. I have lived in this neighborhood for the last 5 years and many of my fellow college students lived in these houses just like these, it was part of what made this side of town interesting with the combination of artist communities and old soulful houses and a laid back attitude. Now however the scrap pickers have come and for some it is not uncommon to wake up in the morning only to find your neighbors steel safety door is missing or someone’s air conditioning unit has been dragged off. Baskets full of various things found around, these people walk up and down the alley ways calling out to residents for any sellable scraps they will part with then the interchange of yelling and swearing at the paltry pickings.

It's a shame many cities are scrapping places like these. I can understand the need for modernization, but as far as I'm concerned, it's not going to do much for crime besides relocate it or force it to sophisticate. I dunno. It'd be nice if they could at least lay down useful things besides condos and strip malls in the wake of the destruction of culture and history.

Stunning. I love the little peeks of color that keep it from being truly monochromatic. But the overall feel is still so oppressive. Really a nice shot.

great picture and story to go along with it.

One of the most unfortunate things about this whole situation is that when buildings are built here they are never maintained, sort of the way they treat their cars and buses here. There are several modern apartment buildings that were put up a couple of years ago here and then never given a second thought, now they are run down and junky. The problem is that people here think in the short term...build a building, sell the space, make the money, run away. There is no respect for the environment of these houses by the people who build them or the people who live in them, and then that brings along a whole slew of new problems, and brings the same old problems back again.

great photo, there is a lot of character in each building :]
