Chongqing is going through a massive demolition program of its older areas. While a lot of these slums are very run down and rat infested there is a lot of the soul and character of Chongqing in these places. Neighborhoods like this will soon only exist in photographs because the people who live there who are mostly older are happy to have the opportunity to leave them but also don't see the value in remembering these older places.

This is the most interesting alley I've ever seen captured or in real life.
Your photography did this scene justice.

Wonderful work!

A few years ago when I visited China I went for a walk and took a few pictures in one of those old hutong naighbourhoods. i would bet it no longer exists as I'm writing these words. I was so full of the feeling of 'how can they destroy their own history, etc'.

But now I would say I can understand why and how someone would like to leave hutong behind and never ever recall they lived there.
It's easy to talk about history and traditions when you live in a comfortable western house with air conditioning and special devices that do your chores for you. I don't think I'd talk about history and preservation if I was to live in a rat infested slime with no access to running water.

I don't know what part of the western world you're in, but I grew up in the ghetto of Philadelphia.

I still remember my history there, including the rats, the needles on the sidewalk, the hookers fist fighting for johns at 3am, and the falling apart homes.

I think it's more about the culture and not a change in scenery.
