On one side you have a pretty boy classmate with too much power who takes photos of under aged boys having sex, on the other side a totally apathetic school administration that won't do anything about it.

One of the things that I have got more and more frustrated with over here is how everyone likes to turn a blind eye to things going on around them. This is one of the biggest cases. This guy in our photography class is the "monitor" or class/teacher liaison and also of course a student. He openly takes photos of under aged boys, naked, doing sexual things and openly shows them off in class. Pedophilia is illegal here in China, and despite other classmates whispering things behind closed doors, no one will do anything about it. I have already spoken to 3 teachers about it and they said they will look into it and nothing gets done. Everyone I have talked to about this said if I went to the police the same thing would happen.

By the way, im not talking about a handful of photos here, im talking about dozens if not hundreds of photos. Even the teacher who was teaching the class at that time, who I am a friend with and have talked to many times about this issue, wont say anything.

Oh, and to make things better, a phrase that im getting tired of hearing from this episode…"you are American, don't worry about it."

Isn't there some sort of morality about child pornography in the world? I mean how in the world did this happen…

Ps. I confronted him about this and all he wanted to do was fight and tell me how the only reason an American would come to China is because he was a failure in America. How uncivilized...

I have been a long time fan of your work and always look forward to seeing your new photos. Now that I read this post, I actually have a sense of pride of looking at your work and knowing that the man behind the camera has a heart the size of China. Keep up the good fight over there and ignore the bigots! You know your doing the right thing and there are a lot of us standing behind you on this.

Good luck.

I feel sorry for the children that are put through that - they may not understand exactly why it is wrong but they will grow up to think that it is alright or feel betrayed by the person who was takin the pictures. He is obviously taking advantage (just wrong!). He obviously has a passion for this sort of thing (very VERY wrong!). And what will happen to any of these young boys that grow up and become 'respectable', and then these picture of them as young boys doing sexual thangs come out? That's would cause any man to loose face within his community! I can only imagine what it would be like to live in China with that over my head.

If I was evil, feeling positively slanderous AND not caring if this guy knew that I did what I did - I'd make posters and post them all over the school... comparing his photos and writting a descrpition down of what child pornography IS in the Chinese law.. and what happends to people who do this. I'd shock the school into submission. I'd get this guy hella mad and then see what stupid move he'd make. I would admit to putting them up and make a very strong case.

But really... Weigh out the pros and cons of each move, Man. You can either do what you did above and surprise the cops... or have them know in pretense by bringing this to their doorstep. Also yeah.. dunno the rules of your school or the law in the area... don't want to be deported either.

And if anyone sez shit about being 'American' again - just throw it back that you're North American - or closely canadian... or something so random that it would throw them off. ;D

So wrong all this shi't is. Sorry you feel stuck... but I know you'll get outta it.

this is really shocking! I thought (from media reports, NGO reports etc) that all pornography was strictly opposed by the Chinese government, I don't understand why the police wouldn't want to get involved - not wanting to be too crude but I would have thought that the Powers-That-Be would love an excuse like this to exercise some state control and make an example.

Question: Do you feel the apathy is just amongst the students and faculty of the school, or that the whole range of state departments (i.e police, medical, education dept, culture ministry etc) don't really care?

(Oh and yes you're right there is an international morality about kids - across every culture and religion people can at least agree that kids and sex don't mix)

I've heard racism in China is pretty bad...I haven't even been there and it's ticking me off.

These sorts of things sometimes make living in China difficult. One reason why I'm leaving, although I haven't had that type of experience myself, thank goodness. But the unwillingness to deal... it's this nonsense that lying or not acknowledging something is a more dignified way to deal with something than making someone loose face.

I'm tired of living in a place where appearances are the *only* thing that matter. When will China grow past this? Now everything is in full form on the outside, but tortting and decaying on the inside.

That said, thank you, thank you for trying to do something. Speaking out is the first step. You're a student there, right? If you make too big a fuss, will they ship you out? Making a higher up actually *see* the photos in question might do some good, even if they do it just to keep you from telling more people. Making the school loose face.

Oh God, that's horrible. You should definately try to pursue this farther because that is so wrong...

Good luck, I hope you can find someone who will do something...

aren't there any higher authorities you could write to? not local police but maybe politicians? dunno how it works there .. but if police doesn't help .. and there's no reasonable other way to stop him from doing what he does .. than that legal system is in a sad state .. hope you'll work something out. really sick that guy ..

I am sad and upset to hear this. I wish I knew what you could do. But it is good that someone will fight for it! I think you are courageous for speaking up! I wonder if there is a way to get proof or take names of people who promise to help. But I don't know anything about Chinese law. :(

there is no difference if he makes ten pictures or thousands of them... he's a bastard and he is an "international" one.
I just couldn't think of any worse crime than this.
:(
But I guess I'm too sensible about that: I'm a 4 months father.

you do... whatever you can to stop this asshole
even if this will just be a drop of water in the ocean... some kid will thank you!
