Well its been a busy couple of months. Lots of scraping together funds to pay next years tuition and my ongoing photography habit.
Classes have kept me pretty busy, lots of 18 hour days and spent cans of red bull later and I seem to be back on top of most things. Starting today I dont have such a cramped schedule and can finally get back to shooting photos. Not that I havnt been shooting photos, I just havnt had a lot of time to do as much as I would have hoped. Got about 20 rolls of film sitting here that needs to be souped, also been shooting some color with my Voigtlander and Leica stuff so hope to have something within a few days for show that maybe is a little different from the normal XP2 black and white shots.
Typical story for rangefinder camera shooters: I have been using a Bessa R2a for a while now, everything else, especially in the viewfinder department seems so...lousy. When I pick up my Canon 20D workhorse, with its black body and white patches of metal showing through the worn black paint, then put it up to my eye I also think "yuck". Rangefinders really work great for me, and the more I use them the less I care to do much with SLR's. Its not a gear snobbery thing or anything, but I really feel more connected to the image I am taking which helps me visualize things and anticipate moments before they happen. Kudos to those brave few companies who have kept rangefinder photography alive for the minority. Now to save for a Leica M8.
I quite enjoy my 35mm lens, but 50mm lenses for me is such a great all rounder for my shooting style. My current 50mm lens is a Leica 50mm Elmar 3.5, ergonomically not the greatest lens ever, but its fantastic. There is something to say about heavy duty over constructed manual focus lenses that are heavy and solid compared to todays plastic fantastic canon and nikon bunch. Yes canon and nikon both have their well built lenses, like the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, one of my all time favorite lenses, but then again its a whole different monster. Anyway I hope to replace my current Leica 50mm with something faster, at least f2.0, I shoot in a lot of low light, need the speed and improved ergonomics couldn't hurt.
So then with the school year ending everything has gone haywire as things come to a closing but now that I seem to be out of the woods I am going to start planning this summer to spend a lot of time shooting photos as well as trying to find a summer chinese course. The idea of going back to the states this summer has been played with, but who knows...its pretty expensive and if I go then I will be flat broke, and to add insult to poverty will probably have to put off my Leica lens purchase off...again.
So then now I need to get back to my photos, especially all the ones I have from before that I have not properly sorted through. Also need to do some write ups and play with the book idea some more. Maybe have something in play by next year!
